With an 80m-span gallery bridge connected to a 20,000m2 double-enclosed space of Baidu Square and Baidu World, the layout of the project respects the Park's master planning concepts and completes all important street facades. A public plaza is created along the main road, giving Baidu a distinctive entrance. The design reflects a concise and simple building style to exhibit the China chic, catering to the needs of Baidu's young workforce.
The realization of this design reflects the traditional pattern of the city of Beijing. Baidu Plaza, built on the red line of the construction land, serves as the welcome park square of the headquarters park. With five buildings interconnected through the air corridor, the project perfectly demonstrates the image of its headquarters campus.
The courtyard and atrium take advantage of the 'chimney effect' to improve indoor air flow, enabling passive natural ventilation, energy conservation, environmental protection, and comfortableness of buildings. The aluminum ribbon and roof solar panels can save 750,000 kWh of electricity for office buildings annually. The reclaimed water system is expected to save RMB 395,000 of water fee and reduce 66,645 tons of carbon emission annually.
The design features a 1.2km long rooftop jogging track and smartly placed reading spaces on corridors between buildings of the Science and Technology Park. The building saves 750,000KWh electricity and reduces 60K tons of CO2, making it a green technology and energy-saving office building.
The project, which started in 2012 and finished in 2017, faced several challenges. The architects had to fully reflect local features of Beijing and integrate them with the design. They also had to build headquarters buildings on scattered plots and maintain their integrality. Despite these challenges, the design was able to meet the needs of Baidu's young workforce.
